Evolution of the surgical glove.

چکیده
r o he early story of the use of gloves by surgeons and obstericians has been well documented by Randers-Pehrson nd by Miller. Walbaum, in 1758, used the cecum of the heep as a partial hand covering in his obstetric practice, nd gloves made successively of cotton, silk, leather, and inally rubber were used in the 19 century. Rubber beoming the material of choice after Charles Goodyear deeloped the vulcanization process to stabilize it in 1844. nitially, gloves were used to protect the surgeons’ hands rom injury during operations and autopsies. It was the ntroduction of the antiseptic technique of operating by oseph Lister in 1867 that initiated a new hazard for the urgeon. This was the high incidence of skin sensitivity to he antiseptic agents used at that time, at first carbolic, then variety of chemicals, which included picric acid, iodine, nd perchloride of mercury. Interestingly, introduction and then widespread use of urgical gloves was to protect the hands of the surgeon and he theater staff from antiseptic solutions rather than to rotect the patient from infection. Certainly, William Halsted of Baltimore was one of the ioneers of the use of rubber gloves, soon after the Johns opkins Hospital was opened in 1889, and although he id not publicize this advance, his trainees no doubt spread he idea. Johann Mikulicz of Breslau observed Halsted at ork and helped to popularize the use of gloves in ermany. The first publication on the use of boiled sterilized ruber gloves in surgery appears to have been by Werner von anteuffel, Professor of Surgery at Tartu, Estonia, in 897. “To wear boiled gloves is to operate with boiled ands,” he said. Initially, rubber gloves were sterilized by boiling and hen put on wet over the wet scrubbed hands. With the ntroduction of dry heat sterilization it was necessary to use dusting powder to facilitate the donning of the gloves. he first powders to be used were lycopodium (the spores f club moss) or talcum powder, which is a combination of agnesium silicate (chemically pure talc) and calcium

متن کاملUsing innovative antimicrobial glove technology to reduce the risk of surgical wound contamination following glove perforation
Introduction / objectives Surgical gloves create a protective barrier, however high perforation rates (6%>60%) are reported in the literature. A recent study has suggested linkage between glove perforation and increased risk of SSI. This investigation evaluated a model of microbial passage through conventional single (A), double-thickness (B) and a tri-layer innovative surgical glove (C) with a...
متن کاملAntibacterial activity of a sterile antimicrobial polyisoprene surgical glove against transient flora following a 2-hours simulated use
BACKGROUND A surgical glove will protect surgeons and patients only if the glove's integrity remains intact. However, several studies have demonstrated that undetected micro-perforations of surgical gloves are common. Because of the possibility of surgical glove puncture, an antimicrobial surgical glove was developed. The aim of this laboratory based experimental study was to assess the antibac...
متن کاملDouble gloving to reduce surgical cross-infection.
BACKGROUND The invasive nature of surgery, with its increased exposure to blood, means that during surgery there is a high risk of transfer of pathogens. Pathogens can be transferred through contact between surgical patients and the surgical team, resulting in post-operative or blood borne infections in patients or blood borne infections in the surgical team. Both patients and the surgical team...
متن کاملEvaluation of an antimicrobial surgical glove to inactivate live human immunodeficiency virus following simulated glove puncture.
BACKGROUND Percutaneous injuries associated with cutting instruments, needles, and other sharps (eg, metallic meshes, bone fragments, etc) occur commonly during surgical procedures, exposing members of surgical teams to the risk for contamination by blood-borne pathogens. This study evaluated the efficacy of an innovative integrated antimicrobial glove to reduce transmission of the human immuno...
متن کاملA new glove port for single incision procedure
Single-incision laparoscopic surgery has gained increasing attention due to its potential to improve the benefits of laparoscopic surgery. However, inconvenience remains for inexperienced surgeons during surgery when instruments conflict with each other, and a glove port is used hesitantly for such diagnosis related groups (DRG) because of its high cost. Authors made a new glove port by an odd ...
